Bathroom Planning – things to consider!

When planning a new bathroom, it’s worth thinking beyond your current needs and considering future resale appeal. Many homebuyers still value having a bath — especially families with young children — so even if you’re more of a shower person, including a bath can make your home more attractive when it comes time to sell. If space is limited, a shower-over-bath or a compact freestanding bath can give you the best of both worlds without crowding the room.

Waterproofing is another important factor that often gets overlooked until it becomes a problem. Tiled showers and wet areas must be properly waterproofed to meet New Zealand building standards and to protect your home from leaks, moisture damage, and mould. Choosing the right waterproofing system and having it installed by qualified professionals ensures your bathroom lasts longer, performs better, and stays healthier. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes steps that makes a huge difference.

Storage is also key to creating a bathroom that feels calm rather than cluttered. Think about where towels, toiletries, cleaning products and everyday essentials will go — vanity drawers, mirrored cabinets, recessed shelving and clever nooks can all help maximise space. Planning storage early means you won’t end up compromising later, and it keeps surfaces clear so your bathroom looks stylish, organised and easy to live in.

Good ventilation is essential for a healthy bathroom, especially in Whangārei’s humid climate. Proper extraction removes steam, reduces condensation, and helps prevent mould and mildew from forming on paint, grout, and ceilings. Consider a high-quality extractor fan that’s appropriately sized for the room, ideally vented to the outside rather than into the ceiling cavity. Pairing good airflow with natural light where possible will keep your bathroom fresher, drier, and longer-lasting.

Water efficiency is another smart consideration that can reduce your running costs without compromising comfort. Modern tapware, showerheads, and toilets are designed to use less water while still performing well, and choosing WELS-rated products can make a noticeable difference over time. If you’re on tank water or keen to be more sustainable, these choices become even more valuable. Efficient fixtures, paired with thoughtful design, help you enjoy a beautiful bathroom that’s kinder on the environment — and your water bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a bathroom renovation usually take?2025-11-24T17:18:40+13:00

Most bathroom renovations take around 3–4 weeks, depending on the scope of work and product availability. We’ll give you a clear timeline before we begin and keep you updated throughout.

Do I need to organise my own tradespeople?2025-11-24T17:18:06+13:00

No — we coordinate all licensed trades, including plumbers, electricians, tilers, and waterproofers. You’ll have one point of contact and we handle the rest.

Can I still use my bathroom during the renovation?2025-11-24T17:17:33+13:00

In most cases the bathroom will be out of action for part of the project, but we’ll plan ahead with you so the disruption is manageable. If you have only one bathroom, we’ll discuss practical options.

Can you help with design and product selection?2025-11-24T17:17:05+13:00

Yes — we can guide you on layout, fittings, tiles, colours and current trends, and recommend products that suit your style and budget.

What will my renovation cost?2025-11-24T17:16:36+13:00

Costs vary based on size, materials, and how much work is required. We provide transparent quotes and can suggest ways to achieve the look you want while staying within budget.

Do your renovations come with warranties or guarantees?2025-11-25T18:08:29+13:00

All work is completed to New Zealand standards, with warranties on workmanship and relevant product guarantees for added peace of mind.

How much does it cost to renovate a bathroom?2025-11-18T14:35:00+13:00

All bathrooms are different in size and layout and so are customer’s fixture and fitting selections! The best idea is for one of our project managers to visit site and discuss your ideas and then provide pricing following the site visit.

What areas do you work in?2025-11-24T17:14:51+13:00

We work in the Whangarei area which covers from Waipu in the south, Sandy Bay in the north, Hikurangi in the West and Whangarei Heads in the East. Depending on distance from Whangarei there may be an extra charge for travel and delivery related costs.

What Our Clients Are Saying

Alistair

We recently replaced our entire kitchen and carried out bathroom renovations. Buildingworks was recommended to us by the kitchen designers to carry out all the preparation work and other aspects of the renovation. We were very happy with the work they did and as there were several different trades involved, it was a great relief not to have to engage them all ourselves and then project manage their work. Brendan organised all of that and made sure they all turned up when they were supposed to and did whatever they needed to do to allow the next stage of the work to be completed – that removed a lot of potential stress for us. The tradesmen were all skilled professionals and we were very pleased with the quality of their work. Brendan even sent someone along to clean and tidy our house at the end of the project – a nice touch! We would have no hesitation in recommending Buildingworks for renovation projects.
