Kitchen & Laundry Planning – things to consider!
When planning a new kitchen or laundry, start by thinking about how your household actually uses these spaces day to day. Many Kiwi homes have busy, multi-purpose kitchens — from school-lunch prep in the mornings to entertaining on weekends — so creating practical zones for prepping, cooking and cleaning makes a world of difference. In the laundry, consider how you handle washing through the wetter months, where baskets will go, and whether features like built-in hampers or a dedicated drying area would make life easier.
Storage is a major consideration in New Zealand homes, especially where space is at a premium. Thoughtful storage can help you make the most of smaller or older floorplans. Deep drawers, pull-out pantries and smart corner solutions work well in kitchens, while laundries benefit from tall cupboards for brooms, vacuums and linen. Planning storage around how your household actually lives helps keep clutter off benches and makes the space feel calm and organised.
Ventilation and lighting are also essential, particularly in NZ’s varied climate. Proper extraction helps manage steam and cooking odours in the kitchen, and good airflow is crucial in the laundry to reduce moisture build-up — especially in coastal or humid regions like Northland. Pair this with layered lighting: bright task lighting for benches and sinks, and softer ambient lighting to make the space warm and inviting in the evenings.
Energy and water efficiency are increasingly important for Kiwi families. Choosing efficient appliances and WELS-rated tapware can reduce your household running costs over time — valuable whether you’re on mains, tank water, or both. Induction cooktops, energy-rated fridges and front-loading washers are great options, and heat-pump dryers perform well in New Zealand’s damp winters. These choices not only help the environment but make your kitchen or laundry more economical in the long run.
