Laundry Renovations

Kitchen & Laundry Planning – things to consider!

When planning a new kitchen or laundry, start by thinking about how your household actually uses these spaces day to day. Many Kiwi homes have busy, multi-purpose kitchens — from school-lunch prep in the mornings to entertaining on weekends — so creating practical zones for prepping, cooking and cleaning makes a world of difference. In the laundry, consider how you handle washing through the wetter months, where baskets will go, and whether features like built-in hampers or a dedicated drying area would make life easier.

Storage is a major consideration in New Zealand homes, especially where space is at a premium. Thoughtful storage can help you make the most of smaller or older floorplans. Deep drawers, pull-out pantries and smart corner solutions work well in kitchens, while laundries benefit from tall cupboards for brooms, vacuums and linen. Planning storage around how your household actually lives helps keep clutter off benches and makes the space feel calm and organised.

Ventilation and lighting are also essential, particularly in NZ’s varied climate. Proper extraction helps manage steam and cooking odours in the kitchen, and good airflow is crucial in the laundry to reduce moisture build-up — especially in coastal or humid regions like Northland. Pair this with layered lighting: bright task lighting for benches and sinks, and softer ambient lighting to make the space warm and inviting in the evenings.

Energy and water efficiency are increasingly important for Kiwi families. Choosing efficient appliances and WELS-rated tapware can reduce your household running costs over time — valuable whether you’re on mains, tank water, or both. Induction cooktops, energy-rated fridges and front-loading washers are great options, and heat-pump dryers perform well in New Zealand’s damp winters. These choices not only help the environment but make your kitchen or laundry more economical in the long run.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a kitchen or laundry renovation usually take?2025-11-25T18:11:07+13:00

Most kitchen and laundry renovations take around 3–6 weeks, depending on the size of the project and the availability of materials. We’ll give you a clear timeline upfront and keep you updated throughout the process.

Can I still use my kitchen or laundry during the renovation?2025-11-25T18:10:08+13:00

There may be periods where the space is out of action, especially when plumbing or electrical work is being completed. We’ll talk you through what to expect and help you plan so the disruption is as minimal as possible.

Can you help with layout and product choices?2025-11-25T18:09:38+13:00

Yes – we can guide you on practical layout options, cabinetry styles, benchtop materials, appliances, and smart storage solutions. We’ll help you choose products that suit your lifestyle, budget and the needs of a Kiwi home.

Do I need building consent for my renovation?2025-11-25T18:09:07+13:00

In most cases, kitchen and laundry renovations don’t require building consent unless you’re moving plumbing, altering structural walls, or making significant changes. We can advise you on what’s needed and handle any consent requirements if they apply.

Do your renovations come with warranties or guarantees?2025-11-25T18:08:29+13:00

All work is completed to New Zealand standards, with warranties on workmanship and relevant product guarantees for added peace of mind.

My old kitchen needs re-doing, can you offer any cost saving ideas to do this?2025-11-24T16:45:56+13:00

Since kitchens are all so different we would need to visit site to view the current kitchen and discuss your design ideas. There are ways that a new look can be achieved by only replacing a few things in your kitchen to refresh the look.

What areas do you work in?2025-11-24T17:14:51+13:00

We work in the Whangarei area which covers from Waipu in the south, Sandy Bay in the north, Hikurangi in the West and Whangarei Heads in the East. Depending on distance from Whangarei there may be an extra charge for travel and delivery related costs.

Alistair

We recently replaced our entire kitchen and carried out bathroom renovations. Buildingworks was recommended to us by the kitchen designers to carry out all the preparation work and other aspects of the renovation. We were very happy with the work they did and as there were several different trades involved, it was a great relief not to have to engage them all ourselves and then project manage their work. Brendan organised all of that and made sure they all turned up when they were supposed to and did whatever they needed to do to allow the next stage of the work to be completed – that removed a lot of potential stress for us. The tradesmen were all skilled professionals and we were very pleased with the quality of their work. Brendan even sent someone along to clean and tidy our house at the end of the project – a nice touch! We would have no hesitation in recommending Buildingworks for renovation projects.
